Release date: March 6th 1999
The movie is based on a Japanese horror manga series which was written and illustrated by Junji Ito. In total, there is 8 different Tomie-movies today and the one I will talk about here is the first, released back in 1999.
The story tells about Tomie, an extremely beautiful but terrifying girl. All men she meets fall head over heals in love with her. Some of them will end up in the mental hospital and one of them will finally kill her. Always. Why always? Because Tomie can’t die. Even if she’s chopped into pieces, only one part of her body is needed for her to revive herself. In this movie, she keeps haunting her childhood friend who’s been heavily traumatized by things that has happened in her life. She doesn’t even remember Tomie…
When you’re going to watch this movie you need to be aware of its age. Personally I can find old horror movies a bit hard to take in due to picture-, sound- and effect-quality. But it works fine in this movie since there is no need for advanced effects of any kind. There is no supernatural creatures running around. It’s a psychological thriller in which the story is the central part and not the technique.
It’s not a very scary movie, but entertaining. Perfect for everybody. 🙂
