LEMONeD I Scream…
Today, Hide would come to Tokyo to visit (he lives in Osaka) and I really looked forward to see him. It’s been 3 years since I visited Japan last time and we had the opportunity to meet.
But before his arrival, I had some time to kill and hence I decided to visit Harajuku Street and LEMONeD Shop.
So I headed to Aoyama-itchome station and started my journey for today.
You better memorize how the subway stations are located to each other in Tokyo, ’cause it’s all written in kanji when you check the prize for the destinations.
So, what’s LEMONed Shop?
What’s left today of the LEMONed Shop(s) is this one I was going to visit today, located close to Takeshita Street. If you walk through Takeshita Street (with start from Harajuku Station) you will eventually end up at the big street Meiji Dori. On the other side you see a portal for “Harajuku Street”.
Follow that street for a while and then turn left. Take a look at this map if you’re interested to go there.
“LEMONed Plant” was a Japanese independent record label founded by Hideto hide Matsumoto, year 1989.
hide (with lower case “h”) was – according to me – one of the most important forefathers of modern Visual Kei, worthy this title. He was originally guitar-player in the legendary band X-Japan and eventually created new bands as well as performed solo.
hide was born 1964 and died 1998. It’s still not clear if his death was an accident or not. What’s for sure though, is that thousands – maybe even millions – of fans still mourn his death.
You will always have a sacred place in my hearth, hide. Rest in peace.
I will tell you a secret. I cry when I watch this.
The music you hear is the song “Without you”, written by Yoshiki as a tribute to hide.
“LEMON” means “Defective Goods” and points at things that are different from the norm and is accidentally produced (and rare) in the mass production of goods. For me, it’s a way of thinking of us “defective goods” as unique.
The “ed” added to the end of LEMONeD will make us think about it in terms of the past. One interpretation is that it will help us remember that…
“Once we’ve all been defective.”
Here’s an interview with hide and a live performance with one of my favorite songs. Beauty and stupid. ❤
hide is still – in one way – attending X Japans concerts, in form a doll…
I follow Yoshiki (X-Japan’s leader and drummer) on Facebook and he frequently posts pictures of hide with the words: “I miss you…” or “I miss him…”
Makes my eyes teary every time.
It gladden me that LEMONeD Shop still exists. I didn’t buy anything, but it would have been a treasure for me – with all these books about hide – if I only could read Japanese. Gosh, I wish I could.
I guess I have to settle down with the dolls and posters I found the other day.
But it feels nice to have been there and talked to some of the staff. If I would have been a boy – with a boys body – I would have bought some of the clothes there. ^^
Well, it was time for me to leave and meet “my own” Hide (with capital H), so I returned to Akasaka to see him. 🙂
