I’ve just watched the three first seasons of the anime Natsume Yuujinchou, which I was recommended to do by my friend Hide. The fourth season will be aired next year.
It was absolutely wonderful. I think I’m in love. ^^ This was that kind of anime that just fills your heart with warmth, harmony, calm and happy feelings. A “feel-good-anime”. It’s about Takashi Natsume who has a special ability. He can see so called Youkais (spirits).
As a child, he got rejected and bullied by people around him since they didn’t understand what he was talking about. They considered him to be lying and hence he learned to keep his experiences as secrets.
Natsume’s grandmother – Reiko – had this ability as well, but she’s been dead for a long time now. She was very powerful and well-known among the Youkais. She used to challenge all spirits she met and she always won. The spirits had to give away their names by writing it down in a book of hers – “The book of friends”. By doing so, she – as the owner of the book – became their master. They had to be submissive and do her bidding’s each time she called.
She never called anyone though. She just took their names and they waited and waited…
Natsume inherited Reiko’s “Book of friends” and spends almost all his time breaking the contracts and returning the names to the spirits who seeks it. Since he’s in possession of this very powerful book, spirits can sense it and seeks him all the time. Some are kind and some are scary.
One character that is very interested in getting his hand on that book is a feline spirit, Madara. He makes a deal with Natsume: he will be the next owner of the book when Natsume dies and until then he will protect the book and hence even Natsume. Madara can transform himself into a chubby cat in which form he’s mostly called “Nyanko Sensei” by Natsume.
Nyanko Sensei is truly comic relief, a funny character that you just have to love. He’s lazy, likes to party and drink a lot of sake – and gets pissed off very easily. Still, he’s one of the most powerful spirits in this story.
Even though he claims that he’s only after the Book of friends, something tells you that he might actually be Natsume’s true friend after all…
I really fell in love with the character Takashi Natsume and I can’t help but feeling a little bit sad that such kindhearted and genuine people probably can’t exist in reality.
Natsume is voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya, who has a really nice, calming voice. I think his voicing talent is one of the reasons why this series is so successful.
This anime is amazing and I recommend everybody to see it. I just can’t wait for the fourth season.
