Interview with Doukoku. (They are musical. They are handsome. They are brothers!)

I got the opportunity to make an interview with the guys in Doukoku (~慟哭~)!

The Japanese band Doukoku was formed back in 2011 and consists of the two brothers Ryusuke and Fumiya. Their fan-base outside Japan is steadily growing and each day they get more and more attention in Europe.

That is not surprising at all, since they bring magnificent and touching music to the world.

And in addition to that, they are two young and charming men. What more can we ask for?

Hopefully they will come oversea and perform very soon! Show them your support!

Interview with Doukoku

Doukoku has been translated into English as “a cry of feelings you can’t put into words”. As non-Japanese, I still don’t know if it regards feelings of pain or joy. Would you like to explain the name a bit further and how it is connected to you and your work?
Doukoku: Doukoku is sadness and pain you can’t say with words. The music is the feelings in our chest´s being spat out. The band name and our music are very intertwined.

Ryusuke, you worked with a solo project for some time when Doukoku had a break. How would you compare the experience of a solo project with working in a band? Any pro’s and con’s?
Ryusuke: Both are fun and interesting. To do completely different things is in the human way of life, it spreads the width of music. There are not so much about pro’s and con’s, I want everyone to come and enjoy the solo too.

Your last music video 飛鳥 (Asuka) is very beautiful. Would you like to tell us something about the song and the idea of the video? Is there a meaning behind the candle lights, clockwork and tea?
Ryusuke: The new song’s MV idea and edit was made by me. I wanted the sound to stay emotionless and inorganic until the keyboard solo. As for the candlelight, clockwork and tea, their purpose is to choreograph the feeling of that.

Ryusuke and Fumiya, you are brothers. How many years difference are there between you two?
Doukoku: Yes, we are brothers; the age difference is 3 years.

What are the pros and cons when working with your brother? Who else is included in your work?
Ryusuke: The advantage of us working together is that exchange of sound can be made immediately. I don’t think there are many disadvantages. Other than my brother, a friend of mine has helped with the Cd’s jacket design, also the design of the flyers is the work of other than us.

Who of you is the leader of the band and why?
Fumiya: Ryusuke is the leader. To put it in a simple way, it’s because he has the ability to take action.

What is your main inspiration when it comes to music?
Doukoku: We feel musical inspiration from books, news and conversations with friends.

You have released several singles, a mini album and one DVD. What song of yours are you most proud of?
Ryusuke: I’m proud of every song. But if I think about it I’m especially proud of “雨声” (Usei) from our second single. It’s a ballad that’s very important to me.

Do you consider yourself to be a visual kei band, and in that case, how did you come in contact with visual kei?
Doukoku: We don’t consider ourselves as a visual kei band. I think it’s good that everyone who listens decide which genre we are. But that everybody calls us visual kei is not an unpleasant thing.

I would like to ask you both some personal questions to get to know you better on a personal level. ^^

What is your favorite food?
Ryusuke: Ramen
Fumiya: Fried Rice

What was your favorite toy when you were a child?
Ryusuke: Barcode Butler (バーコードバトラー), It was my favorite manga when I was in elementary school.
Fumiya: SNES (As a child it was all about gaming)

Where you a good student in school?
Ryusuke: I had a short temper so I often argued with the teachers. The grades were good in it’s own way.
Fumiya: I was serious. I was hardly ever angry at the teachers and the grades were also good.

If you could be a historical person for one day, who would you choose and why?
Ryusuke: Michael Jackson. I’m imagining how it would feel like to be able to dance and sing like him.
Fumiya: The Japanese mystery writer, Edogawa Rampo (江戸川乱歩). I’m a fan of his works. His fiction and he as a person is a mystery in itself so just to know a little more about it.

What is the best thing about your brother?
Ryusuke: He can be very considerate to everyone.
Fumiya: In everything, he take’s action without hesitation.

Does your brother have any bad habits? ^^
Ryusuke: That he doesn’t act until the last minute
Fumiya: That he forget the lyrics in the middle of a song. The ability to learn still seems to be weak.

And as a conclusion, can you tell us something about what´s coming up next from Doukoku?
Doukoku: We want to complete a new album, probably, before spring next year.

Is there anything more you would like to say to your oversea fans?
Doukoku: We want to go to Europe and meet you all! Thank you for your support!

Thank you so much for taking part of this interview!

And to you readers, please share a link to this interview to spread the words of Doukoku!
