I got the honor and opportunity to interview Nobu, singer of ZANROKKU. I discovered them via Youtube, watching the music video “Silent Alice”. It’s a really great song and you can watch it below the interview. The opera singing and Nobu’s screams in the end are so beautiful!

And now I start asking questions to Nobu…
How did you personally come in contact with Visual Kei and what do you find interesting about it?
Nobu: First time I heard about it was on MTV and then we found out more about it via the Internet. It’s really awesome that music genres and fashion can become one. We think it’s perfect to interact with people via this style and by rocking with our music.
What do you think makes Indonesian Visual Kei different from Japanese Visual Kei?
Nobu: It’s interesting but also a bit confusing, since Indonesians can’t be Japanese, and Japanese can’t be Indonesian. Maybe it’s the language and the sound that differs.
When did ZANROKKU’s activity start and how?
Nobu: ZANROKKU was born April 12th 2008. We did start the activity with Open Our eyes and Take a Bath… Haha, just kidding.
What have you released so far and what is coming next?
Nobu: Our First single was “KABUKI” and it was released in 2009. Our 2nd single was “Silent Alice” and it was released on November 2013.
Our next single will be released next month. It’s called “Let me Real”. It’s about LOVE, but in a different way.
Does your music have any certain theme? What do you want to express via ZANROKKU’s music?
Nobu: Our music is gloomy and dark rock. We also try to tell people about life and love in different ways… It’s simple, but not as simple as you think.
Who composes ZANROKKU ’s songs?
Nobu: All lyrics are written by me, but the music is composed by all members.
What is the funniest part of working with music?
Nobu: The funniest part is to compose. Each member has his own way of brainstorming and we know each other’s habits (or rather bad habits). Our finishing touch with the music is rehearsal and that’s when there’s no play, we become a serious machine, he he. When we perform, sometimes me and Ryuu tease Jun, the silent guy. It’s also fun to meet the fans. I’m the only one who does crazy things, like walking around in the crowd, talking with people or does something crazy with the fans while the other members are busy preparing the live performance.
What is the story behind “Silent Alice”?
Nobu: The song tells the story about a girl who has been raped. She has lost everything she had, even her emotions.
Have you ever performed in Europe?
Nobu: We haven’t performed in Europe yet, but sooner or later, we WILL rock on in Europe!
Do you have any favorite bands/singers?
Nobu: My Favorite singer is Marilyn Manson, Hyde from (L’arc~en~Ciel), Kyo (Dir en Grey) and Kiyoharu (SADS). My favorite bands are Dir en Grey and Lynch.
What is your favorite instrument?
Nobu: My favorite instrument is harp.
Is there anything a fan can do to catch your interest during a live show?
Nobu: When fans hold up fan-signs with my name or the name of the band, I see them. After a live show, I always join the crowd to talk to people.
Sometimes fans ask for my official e-mail. I directly reply fan mails as soon as I have some spare time.
What do you think is good qualities in a girlfriend?
Nobu: I’m not concern about it now…but it would be a girl with a mature personality and who loves to cook.
What is the happiest memory from your childhood?
Nobu: When my grandfather played on his guitar for me, every night before I fell to sleep ^_^.
If you could make one wish come true, what would it be?
Nobu: I wish I could erase WAR from this world, that’s enough.
What is the best thing with living in Indonesia?
Nobu: Tropical fruit! Durian! And Bali and the High Place (Mountain).
Durian is a fruit I’ve never tried. How does it taste?
Nobu: When you smell it for the first time, you might say “What the Hell!” But the taste is really sweet… like mango.
What do you want to say to people who yet haven’t discovered ZANROKKU?
Nobu: Greetings! We are an Indonesian Visual Kei Rock band!
Where can people listen to your music?
Nobu: You find our music on www.reverbnation.com/ZANROKKU.
What do you want to say to your loyal fans?
Nobu: “I love you all! I love you so much!”
